What is a Business Case?

A business case sets out the rationale for change.

It defines the problem your organisation needs to solve, outlines the options available and defines the value, costs and risks of each option.

It ensures that any investment is backed by experience, evidence, alignment to strategy and a shared understanding of the expected benefits.

Challenges it solves

Many charities and membership bodies recognise the need improve services and achieve efficiencies by modernising their services, processes and systems, but struggle to answer key questions:

  • “Why are we doing this?”
  • “What are we trying to achieve?”
  • “How will we measure success?”
  • “What will it cost and is it worth it?”
  • “What are barriers?”
  • “What are the risks?”
  • “What don’t we know”

Without a structured business case, projects can fail due to assumptions, overly optimistic outcomes or a lack of urgency, leading to unclear scope, insufficient budget and difficulty securing leadership buy-in or user adoption.

A well-defined business case brings clarity, evidence, and accountability to decision-making, ensuring your investment is justified and supported across the organisation.
